After the loneliness and isolation of months in the pandemic, many of us began trying to find ways to connect safely with each other from our homes. For musicians accustomed to life on the road, meeting new people, and sharing music, the change of lifestyle was big. Creativity needs to be fed and that spark is often lit by playing with other musicians and feeling the communication between voices and instruments.
Ajeet spent the first winter of the pandemic in the snow covered woods of New Hampshire. Sukhmani spent those months in a small apartment just outside of Washington, DC. Aisling was in the Irish countryside. With oceans and highways and mountains between them, these three creative and talented musicians found a way to connect through music that not only connected the three of them, but brought people all over the world together.
It started with a song. Ash + Bone was written as a call to the wildness in each of us that longs for freedom.
The three of them decided to try playing together through different online conferencing technologies to see if they could make it work. With some finesse and some of Ajeet’s genius as a music producer and engineer, they were able to record a live version of their new song. They had so much fun making it, they decided to post the video on social media, and it went viral. People, isolated in their homes, were moved by this sharing. They felt the pull towards each other. The song’s deep roots lie in friendship, and in the desire to empower one another to seek freedom at all costs.
Requests rolled in for a recorded version of the song, and so they have finally delivered. The howls in this song are in celebration of the courage in one another as we witness the beauty of transformation.
